Get started with your hardware wallet

A clear, secure onboarding flow to set up your device, install Ledger Live, and protect your recovery phrase.

Quick start — 6 steps to secure setup

Follow these steps on first use. The process below walks you through initializing the device, installing the companion app, and keeping your recovery phrase safe.

  1. 1

    Unbox and inspect

Confirm packaging is sealed and the device shows no signs of tampering. Keep the packaging and recovery sheet that came with the device—these will be used during setup.

  2. 2

    Download Ledger Live (official app)

On your desktop or mobile, download the official companion app to manage accounts, install apps, and perform transactions. Use the vendor’s official site to avoid phishing. Once installed, open Ledger Live and choose Set up device.

  3. 3

    Connect and initialize

Connect the hardware device with the supplied cable. Create a new wallet on the device: choose a PIN you can remember but isn’t easily guessable. The device itself generates your private keys — the app only helps manage them.

  4. 4

    Write down your recovery phrase

The device will display a recovery phrase (a sequence of words). Write each word in order on the supplied recovery sheet. This phrase is the only way to recover funds if your device is lost or broken — never store it digitally or share it with anyone.

  5. 5

    Verify & install apps

Confirm your recovery phrase when prompted. In Ledger Live, install the specific cryptocurrency apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc.) you plan to use. Install only from within the official Ledger Live interface to ensure authenticity.

  6. 6

    Add accounts and transfer funds

Add accounts in Ledger Live for each crypto you want to hold, receive a test transfer first, and verify balances on the device when sending. Always confirm addresses on the hardware device’s screen before approving a transaction.

Security fundamentals

Never share your recovery phrase.
Treat it like cash—anyone with it can access your funds.
Beware of phishing.
Only use the official app and URLs. Bookmark the official site and verify addresses shown during transactions.
Use a secure PIN.
Your PIN prevents casual access. Avoid simple sequences and do not write it on the recovery sheet.
Backup strategy.
Store your recovery sheet in a safe, separate location (consider a safety deposit box or other offline secure storage).
